St. Petersburg's main international gateway serving northwest Russia.

Location
St. Petersburg, Russia
Pulkovo Airport is the principal commercial airport serving St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city. It is located approximately 15 kilometers south of the city center near the historic Pulkovo Heights area, known for its World War II significance. The airport underwent a major modernization program that resulted in the opening of a new Terminal 1 in 2014, consolidating operations into a single modern facility. It is managed under a public-private partnership framework and handles tens of millions of passengers annually, serving as a key hub for domestic and international routes. Following Western sanctions imposed after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, many international carriers suspended operations, significantly reducing the airport's international traffic. Domestic and limited international services, primarily to non-sanctioning countries, continued to operate.
Terminals
The airport operates a single consolidated modern terminal (Terminal 1), opened in 2014, which handles both domestic and international passengers.
Getting to & from
The airport is connected to the city center primarily by bus and minibus (marshrutka) routes, as well as taxi services, with no direct metro or rail link as of the early 2020s.
Airlines here
Rossiya Airlines uses Pulkovo as its primary hub, while Aeroflot and other Russian carriers maintain significant operations here.
Notable facts
  • The airport is named after the nearby Pulkovo Heights, site of significant WWII battles during the Siege of Leningrad.
  • A new state-of-the-art terminal opened in December 2014 as part of a major redevelopment project.
  • Pulkovo handled over 20 million passengers in 2019, a record at the time.
  • International operations were severely curtailed in 2022 following European airspace closures and airline suspensions due to sanctions.
  • The airport is operated under a concession agreement by Pulkovo Airport LLC, a consortium including Fraport AG.
