The Antonov An-148 is a regional jet aircraft developed by the Antonov design bureau in Ukraine, intended to serve short and medium-haul routes. It was designed as a modern replacement for aging Soviet-era regional aircraft and features a high-wing configuration with podded engines mounted under the wings, offering good performance from shorter and less-developed airstrips.
The aircraft entered service in the mid-2000s and was produced jointly in Ukraine and Russia, with final assembly also taking place at the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association (VASO) in Russia. It is capable of operating in harsh climatic conditions, making it suitable for Russian regional routes.
The An-148 family includes several variants with differing fuselage lengths and range capabilities. Despite modest commercial success, production was hampered by political tensions between Russia and Ukraine following 2014, effectively curtailing further development and new orders.
Notable operators
Rossiya Airlines and Angara Airlines have been among the primary operators of the An-148, along with Air Koryo in North Korea and various smaller regional carriers.
Notable facts
- ›The An-148 made its maiden flight on 17 December 2004.
- ›Its high-wing design allows engine nacelles to sit low, easing maintenance access.
- ›Russia–Ukraine political tensions after 2014 severely disrupted the supply chain and production.
- ›A Saratov Airlines An-148 crashed near Moscow in February 2018, killing all 71 on board.
- ›Variants include the An-148-100A, 100B, and 100E, differing in range and capacity.

Encyclopaedia
The Antonov An-148 is a regional jet designed and primarily built by the Ukrainian aerospace manufacturer Antonov of Ukraine. Between 2009 and 2018, the An-148 was also being produced on a second production line in Russia by Voronezh Aircraft Production Association; however, production of the type in Russia was discontinued as a consequence of the wider souring political relations between Ukraine and Russia. While the last Russian-built An-148 was completed in October 2018, Ukraine continued to both produce and develop the type.
