Asia's premier aviation hub built on reclaimed land.

Opened
1998
Location
Hong Kong, China (SAR)
Hong Kong International Airport (IATA: HKG, ICAO: VHHH) is the primary commercial airport serving Hong Kong, located on the island of Chek Lap Kok in Lantau. Built almost entirely on reclaimed land, the airport opened in 1998 and replaced the former Kai Tak Airport, which had been constrained by its urban location. The airport consistently ranks among the world's busiest in terms of international passenger traffic and cargo volume, regularly placing in the top three globally for air freight. Its strategic location makes it a critical gateway between mainland China, Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world. Designed by renowned architect Sir Norman Foster, the airport's iconic passenger terminal is one of the largest buildings in the world by floor area. A major expansion program, known as the Three-Runway System (3RS), is underway to increase capacity and maintain the airport's competitive position.
Terminals
The airport has two main passenger terminals—Terminal 1 and Terminal 2—with T1 being the primary facility handling the majority of flights and T2 serving as a check-in and retail hub connected by a transit system.
Getting to & from
The Airport Express rail link provides a fast, direct connection to Hong Kong's urban core, reaching Hong Kong Station in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island in approximately 24 minutes, with buses and ferries offering additional options.
Airlines here
Cathay Pacific uses Hong Kong International as its primary hub, while HK Express, Air Hong Kong, and numerous international carriers including British Airways, Qantas, Emirates, and Lufthansa operate services here.
Notable facts
