It is one of the larger regional airports in Ukraine and historically served as an important hub for both domestic and international traffic to this major industrial city. The airport handled a variety of European and domestic routes prior to the suspension of commercial operations. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ukrainian airspace was closed to commercial aviation, effectively halting all scheduled passenger services at DNK along with all other Ukrainian airports. The facility had seen investment and modernization efforts in the years leading up to the conflict, with ambitions to expand its international connectivity. Its future operations remain contingent on the broader security situation in Ukraine.
