The Boeing 737-400 is a stretched variant of the 737 Classic family, introduced in the late 1980s to fill the gap between the shorter -300 and longer -500 models. It offered airlines increased passenger capacity while retaining the fuel efficiency and operational economics of the Classic series. Entering service in 1988, the -400 became popular with charter and low-cost carriers seeking a cost-effective medium-capacity narrowbody. It features CFM56-3 turbofan engines and a fuselage stretched approximately 3 metres compared to the -300. While no longer in production, the 737-400 remains in service with various smaller carriers and cargo operators worldwide. Many examples have been converted to freighter configuration, extending the type's operational life well into the 21st century.

The Boeing 737 Classic is a series of narrow-body airliners produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the second generation of the Boeing 737 series of aircraft. Development began in 1979 and the first variant, the 737-300, first flew in February 1984 and entered service that December. The stretched 737-400 first flew in February 1988 and entered service later that year. The shortest variant, the 737-500, first flew in June 1989 and entered service in 1990.
