Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport, commonly known as Sydney Airport, is Australia's busiest airport and one of the oldest continuously operating commercial airports in the world. Located at Mascot, approximately 8 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, it serves as the primary hub for both domestic and international travel in Australia. The airport is named after pioneering Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who made the first transpacific flight in 1928. It handles over 40 million passengers annually under normal conditions and serves destinations across Asia, the Pacific, Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. Unlike most major international airports, Sydney Airport operates as a single-runway complex with intersecting runways, which limits capacity and has driven long-running debate about the need for additional airport infrastructure in the Sydney Basin. Western Sydney Airport at Badgerys Creek is under development to relieve congestion.
