AirAsia X is a Malaysian long-haul low-cost carrier and an affiliate of the AirAsia Group. Established to bring affordable long-distance travel to passengers across Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, it operates medium-to-long-haul routes primarily from its base at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The airline was founded in 2007 and has positioned itself as one of Asia's pioneering long-haul budget carriers, offering a no-frills model with optional premium seats. It targets leisure and value-conscious travelers on routes that were traditionally dominated by full-service carriers. AirAsia X underwent significant financial restructuring following the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on aviation. The carrier relaunched operations progressively from 2022 onward, rebuilding its network and fleet as travel demand recovered across the Asia-Pacific region.
