It is named after the renowned Renaissance scientist Galileo Galilei, who was born in Pisa in 1564. The airport handles both domestic and international traffic, making it one of the busiest airports in Italy. Located just a few kilometres from the city centre of Pisa and approximately 80 kilometres from Florence, the airport serves as a convenient entry point for tourists visiting iconic destinations such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Lucca, and the wider Tuscany region. Pisa is ranked 10th in Italy in terms of passenger numbers. It is named after Galileo Galilei, the scientist and native of Pisa. The airport was first developed for the military in the 1930s and 1940s. The airport was used by 5,233,118 passengers in 2017. It serves as a focus city of Ryanair.
