Located approximately 8 kilometres south-west of the city centre, the airport has historically served as an important hub for regional and international travel in southern Ukraine. The airport handled a growing number of passengers in the years before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which led to the suspension of commercial flights. Prior to closure, it connected Odesa with destinations across Europe and the Middle East, serving carriers such as Ukraine International Airlines, Ryanair, and Turkish Airlines. As of the mid-2020s, the airport remains closed to civilian traffic due to the ongoing war, with its future operations dependent on the security situation in the region.
