O.R. Tambo International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Africa, serving the Johannesburg metropolitan area and acting as the primary hub for international travel to and from South Africa. Named after Oliver Reginald Tambo, a prominent anti-apartheid activist and former president of the African National Congress, the airport was renamed in 2006 from Johannesburg International Airport. Located in Kempton Park, approximately 25 kilometres east of central Johannesburg, the airport handles tens of millions of passengers annually and connects South Africa to destinations across six continents. It serves as the main hub for South African Airways and several other carriers. The airport features modern facilities including two main terminal buildings, a transit hotel, extensive retail and dining options, and a dedicated Gautrain rapid rail station providing efficient links to Johannesburg and Pretoria.
