Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX/MMMX) is the primary international airport serving Mexico City and the surrounding metropolitan area. It is the busiest airport in Latin America by passenger traffic and one of the most congested airports in the world, handling over 50 million passengers annually before the COVID-19 pandemic. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,230 meters (7,316 feet) above sea level, the airport poses unique operational challenges due to the thin air affecting aircraft performance. Named after the revered Mexican president Benito Juárez, the airport has served as the main hub for Aeroméxico and its predecessors for decades. Capacity constraints at MEX led to the planning and eventual opening of Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in 2022 to help absorb demand, though MEX continues to dominate commercial aviation in Mexico.
Terminals
The airport has two main terminals: Terminal 1, the original and larger facility, and Terminal 2, opened in 2007 and connected to Terminal 1 by a free inter-terminal shuttle.
Getting to & from
The airport is served by the Mexico City Metro (Line 5, Terminal Aérea station, and Line B, Ciudad Azteca connection), Metrobús, taxis, and ride-hailing services providing access to the city center.
Airlines here
Aeroméxico uses MEX as its primary hub, while numerous international carriers including American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, Air France, Iberia, and LATAM operate regular flights here.
Notable facts
  • One of the highest-elevation major commercial airports in the world at approximately 2,230 m (7,316 ft) above sea level.
  • Ranked among the most congested airports globally due to slot restrictions and urban geography limiting expansion.
  • Terminal 2 opened in 2007 and is primarily used by Aeroméxico and its SkyTeam alliance partners.
  • The airport is located just 5 km from the historic city center, making it unusually close to a major urban core.
  • Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) opened in March 2022 as a supplementary airport to relieve congestion at MEX.
