Avianca, officially Aerovías del Continente Americano S.A., is the national flag carrier of Colombia and one of the oldest commercial airlines in the world. Founded in 1919, it holds the distinction of being the second oldest continuously operating airline globally, originally established as SCADTA (Sociedad Colombo-Alemana de Transportes Aéreos). The airline operates an extensive network across Colombia, Latin America, North America, Europe, and beyond, serving tens of millions of passengers annually. Its primary hub is El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, with additional hubs in other major Latin American cities. Avianca filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic but emerged from bankruptcy in late 2021 under new ownership and restructuring. It remains one of the most prominent carriers in Latin America and a member of Star Alliance.
