The airport handles both domestic and international traffic, connecting the region to major Russian hubs as well as select European and Asian destinations. The airport underwent significant modernisation and terminal expansion in the lead-up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup, for which Nizhny Novgorod was one of the host cities. Improvements included a new passenger terminal, upgraded runways, and enhanced passenger facilities. Aeroflot and its subsidiaries, along with Pobeda and other Russian carriers, operate services through Strigino. International connectivity has been substantially reduced following sanctions and airspace closures related to the 2022 conflict in Ukraine.
