The airport underwent significant modernization and reconstruction works in the years leading up to and following the 2010s, improving its terminal capacity and infrastructure. It serves millions of passengers annually and connects Chelyabinsk to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and various international destinations. Chelyabinsk gained worldwide attention in February 2013 when a meteorite superbolide exploded in the atmosphere above the region, and the airport itself experienced minor structural damage from the resulting shockwave.
