Location
Kabul, Afghanistan
Kabul International Airport, also known as Hamid Karzai International Airport, is the main commercial and military aviation hub of Afghanistan, located in the capital city of Kabul. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,791 metres (5,876 feet) above sea level, it is one of the highest-altitude major airports in the world, which presents unique operational challenges for aircraft performance. The airport gained global attention in August 2021 during the chaotic U.S. and NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan, when it became the scene of mass evacuations following the Taliban's takeover of Kabul. Since then, airport operations have been significantly reduced, with limited international flights and ongoing infrastructure rehabilitation efforts under Taliban administration.
Terminals
The airport has a main passenger terminal that was partially damaged and looted during the 2021 crisis, with capacity significantly below pre-2021 operational levels.
Getting to & from
Ground transport to central Kabul is primarily by private taxi or road vehicle, as no formal rail or dedicated bus rapid transit service exists.
Airlines here
Ariana Afghan Airlines, the national carrier, operates limited routes, alongside Kam Air and select regional carriers connecting Kabul to destinations in the Middle East and Central Asia.
