The airline was established in the 1980s and has grown to become a significant player in the Iranian aviation market. The carrier is headquartered in Tehran and primarily operates out of Mehrabad International Airport. It serves a wide domestic network, linking major urban centers with smaller regional airports throughout the country. Iran Aseman Airlines has faced significant challenges related to international sanctions, which have restricted its ability to acquire modern Western aircraft and spare parts. The airline gained international attention following a tragic ATR 72 crash in February 2018 in the Zagros Mountains, which resulted in the deaths of all 66 people on board.
