Location
New York, United States
LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is one of three major commercial airports serving the New York metropolitan area, located in the Queens borough of New York City. Situated on Flushing Bay and Bowery Bay, it is approximately 8 miles from Midtown Manhattan, making it the closest major airport to the city center. The airport underwent a major redevelopment beginning in 2016, with a new, unified terminal complex replacing aging infrastructure. The $8 billion renovation, led by LaGuardia Gateway Partners, has modernized the passenger experience significantly. LaGuardia primarily handles domestic flights and is one of the busiest airports in the United States by passenger volume. It operates under slot controls set by the FAA, limiting the number of daily flight operations.
Terminals
LaGuardia has two active terminal buildings — Terminal B (the new central terminal) and Terminal C/D used by Delta Air Lines — connected by an indoor pedestrian walkway.
Getting to & from
Ground access is provided by taxis, ride-shares, the M60 Select Bus Service to Manhattan, and a new AirTrain connection to the NYC subway is under development.
Airlines here
Delta Air Lines uses LaGuardia as a focus city and operates the majority of flights, with other major carriers including American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines also serving the airport.
Notable facts
  • Named after Fiorello LaGuardia, mayor of New York City from 1934 to 1945.
  • LaGuardia is subject to FAA High Density Rule slot controls limiting daily operations.
  • The airport sits on only about 680 acres, making it one of the smallest major U.S. airports by land area.
  • Vice President Joe Biden famously compared LaGuardia's old terminals to a third-world country in 2014, spurring redevelopment.
  • The new Terminal B won awards for its design and opened its first gates in 2018.
