Location
Santorini Island, Greece
Santorini International Airport, also known as Thira Airport, serves the famous volcanic island of Santorini in the South Aegean region of Greece. Named after Nikos Kazantzakis in some local references, it is formally designated as Santorini (Thira) Airport and handles both domestic and international traffic. The airport is located near the village of Monolithos on the eastern side of the island, a relatively flat area compared to the dramatic caldera cliffs associated with the island's famous villages like Oia and Fira. It is one of the busiest airports in Greece during the summer tourist season. Due to its short runway and challenging approaches, the airport imposes operational constraints on larger aircraft. It experiences intense seasonal demand, primarily from May through October, when millions of tourists visit the island each year.
Terminals
The airport has a single passenger terminal that handles both domestic and international arrivals and departures.
Getting to & from
Ground transport options from the airport include public buses, taxis, and private transfers connecting to Fira and other villages on the island.
Airlines here
Major carriers serving the airport include Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air, Ryanair, easyJet, and numerous European charter airlines during the summer season.
Notable facts
  • The airport's short runway of approximately 2,127 meters limits operations to narrowbody aircraft.
  • Santorini Airport is one of the top 10 busiest airports in Greece by passenger volume.
  • The airport sits at an elevation of about 127 feet (39 meters) above sea level near the eastern coast.
  • Seasonal traffic surges dramatically in summer, with the airport often operating near or above capacity.
  • The IATA code JTR derives from the island's ancient name, Thera or Thira.
