Air Koryo is the state-owned national airline of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, operating under strict government control. Founded in 1950, it is one of the oldest airlines in Asia and serves as the country's sole commercial carrier, connecting Pyongyang with a limited number of international destinations. The airline operates primarily from Pyongyang Sunan International Airport and has historically served routes to China, Russia, and occasionally other destinations. Due to international sanctions and diplomatic isolation, its network remains extremely limited compared to other national carriers. Air Koryo is widely noted for being the only airline to hold a one-star rating from aviation review site Skytrax, reflecting its aging fleet, limited amenities, and restricted service standards. Despite this, it remains an essential link between North Korea and the outside world for the few travelers permitted to visit.
