Pyongyang Sunan International Airport is the main international airport serving the North Korean capital, Pyongyang. It is located in the Sunan district, approximately 24 kilometers north of the city center. The airport serves as the primary hub for Air Koryo, North Korea's national carrier and only airline. The airport underwent significant renovation and expansion in the 2010s, with a modern new terminal completed around 2015 under the direction of Kim Jong-un. The new terminal features a contemporary design with passenger amenities uncommon in other parts of North Korea. Due to North Korea's extreme isolation and international sanctions, the airport handles very limited international traffic. Scheduled international routes have historically been restricted largely to flights to Beijing and occasionally other Chinese cities, with operations significantly curtailed in recent years.
