LAPA (Líneas Aéreas Privadas Argentinas) was an Argentine private airline that operated primarily domestic routes within Argentina during the 1990s and early 2000s. The carrier was known for offering competitive fares and expanding rapidly during Argentina's aviation deregulation period. LAPA gained notoriety following a tragic accident on August 31, 1999, when Flight 3142 crashed during takeoff at Jorge Newbery Airport in Buenos Aires, killing 65 of the 95 people on board. The accident was attributed to crew error and raised serious concerns about safety standards at the airline. Following the accident and subsequent regulatory scrutiny, LAPA's operations declined significantly. The airline eventually ceased operations in the early 2000s amid Argentina's broader economic crisis and the fallout from the 1999 disaster.
