Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, is a United States Space Force installation located in northwestern Greenland, approximately 1,200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The airfield, designated THU/BGTL, serves primarily military and government purposes and is not open to commercial civilian traffic. The base was established by the United States military during the Cold War era and has played a strategic role in Arctic defense, early warning systems, and space surveillance. It was renamed from Thule Air Base to Pituffik Space Base in 2023 to reflect its evolving mission under the U.S. Space Force. The surrounding area is one of the most remote and harsh environments on Earth, with extreme cold and limited infrastructure. Access is tightly controlled and restricted to authorized military and government personnel.
