La Nubia Airport (IATA: MZL, ICAO: SKMZ) serves Manizales, the capital of Caldas Department in the Coffee Region of Colombia. Situated at approximately 2,080 meters (6,824 feet) above sea level, it is one of the highest commercial airports in Colombia and faces significant operational constraints due to its mountainous terrain and short runway. The airport's single runway measures roughly 1,500 meters, limiting operations to smaller aircraft and preventing service by large jets. Challenging weather conditions, including frequent fog and low clouds, regularly cause flight delays and cancellations, making reliability a persistent concern for passengers. Due to these structural limitations, Colombian authorities have long pursued plans to replace La Nubia with a new regional airport, referred to as the Aerocafé project, intended to be built at a more suitable location in the region to better serve Manizales and the broader Coffee Region.
