Mataveri International Airport (IPC/SCIP) serves Easter Island (Isla de Pascua), a Chilean territory located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean roughly 3,700 kilometers west of mainland Chile. It is widely regarded as one of the most isolated commercial airports on Earth, sitting near the island's only town, Hanga Roa. The airport was originally developed in part with U.S. assistance during the mid-20th century and later expanded under an agreement with NASA, which designated it as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle program. Its single runway is long enough to accommodate large commercial aircraft. Due to Easter Island's extreme isolation, Mataveri handles a relatively modest volume of passengers, primarily tourists visiting the island's famous Moai statues and UNESCO World Heritage archaeological sites. LATAM Airlines operates regular scheduled service connecting the island to Santiago and occasionally Tahiti.
