Honiara International Airport, also known as Henderson Field, serves as the primary international gateway to the Solomon Islands. Located approximately 11 kilometres east of Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal, it handles the majority of international and domestic air traffic for the country. The airport sits on a historically significant site, originally constructed by the United States military during World War II as Henderson Field, named after Major Lofton Henderson who was killed in the Battle of Midway. It was the scene of intense fighting during the Guadalcanal Campaign in 1942. The airport has a single runway and a modest terminal facility suited to the relatively low passenger volumes of the Solomon Islands. Ongoing infrastructure improvements have been pursued in recent years to support regional connectivity and tourism.
