Bujumbura Melchior Ndadaye International Airport is the main and only international airport serving Burundi, located approximately 11 kilometres northwest of the country's capital and largest city, Bujumbura. It serves as the critical hub for both international and domestic air travel in one of Africa's smallest and most landlocked nations. The airport was renamed in honour of Melchior Ndadaye, Burundi's first democratically elected president, who was assassinated in 1993. The facility handles a modest volume of traffic given Burundi's size and economic conditions, with connectivity primarily to other African cities and a few intercontinental destinations. Despite limited infrastructure investment, the airport remains essential for humanitarian operations, regional connectivity, and supporting international organizations active in Burundi. Ongoing infrastructure challenges and political instability have historically affected flight frequency and airline interest.
