Tuninter was a Tunisian regional airline that operated as a subsidiary of Tunisair, the national carrier of Tunisia. It was established to handle regional and domestic routes, complementing the wider network of its parent company. The airline became widely known due to a fatal accident on August 6, 2005, when Tuninter Flight 1153, an ATR 72, ditched into the Mediterranean Sea near Sicily, Italy, after fuel exhaustion caused both engines to fail. Of the 39 people on board, 16 died. Investigations revealed the aircraft had been fitted with an incorrect fuel quantity indicator designed for an ATR 42, leading to inaccurate fuel readings. Following the accident, Tuninter faced significant scrutiny and reputational damage. The airline ultimately ceased operations, with its routes and functions absorbed back into Tunisair.
