Founded in the 1990s, it grew to become one of South Africa's more prominent independent airlines, competing with South African Airways and other carriers on key domestic routes. The airline operated routes connecting major South African cities including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and Port Elizabeth, as well as some regional African destinations. Nationwide Airlines ceased operations in April 2008 following financial difficulties, grounding its fleet and leaving passengers stranded.
