Saky Air Base, located near Novofedorivka in Crimea, is a former Soviet and Ukrainian military airfield with a long operational history dating back to the Soviet era. It served as a key naval aviation installation for the Soviet Black Sea Fleet and later the Ukrainian Navy, hosting carrier-based aircraft training operations. The base gained international attention on August 9, 2022, when a series of powerful explosions destroyed multiple Russian aircraft and ammunition stores at the facility. Russia had been using the base following its annexation of Crimea in 2014. The explosions caused significant casualties and damage, and were widely attributed to a Ukrainian strike, though Ukraine initially did not officially claim responsibility. The airfield is located approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Simferopol and is situated near the western coast of the Crimean Peninsula. It remains a strategically significant military installation and is not open to civilian commercial traffic.
