The base is most notably associated with the F-16 Fighting Falcon, which has been the primary aircraft type operated there for decades, and is expected to transition to the F-35 Lightning II as the Netherlands modernizes its air fleet. Volkel is also widely reported to be one of the NATO bases in Europe where US B61 nuclear gravity bombs are stored under NATO nuclear sharing arrangements, though this has never been officially confirmed by Dutch authorities.
