It is the second busiest airport in Slovakia and handles both scheduled and charter flights, particularly strong during winter ski season. The airport sits at an elevation of approximately 694 metres above sea level, making it one of the higher-altitude airports in Central Europe. Its traffic is heavily seasonal, peaking in winter when skiers and tourists travel to the nearby Tatra mountain resorts. Due to its location near the Polish border, the airport also draws passengers from southern Poland seeking access to the Tatra region.
