Subic Bay International Airport, designated IATA code SFS and ICAO code RPLB, is located within the Subic Bay Freeport Zone near Olongapo City in Zambales, Philippines. The airport occupies the site of the former U.S. Navy's Naval Air Station Cubi Point, one of the largest naval air facilities in Asia during the Cold War era, carved directly into a mountainside. Following the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the Philippines in 1992 after the Senate rejected a new base treaty, the facility was converted to civilian use and placed under the administration of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA). The airport has since served as a secondary international gateway to the greater Manila region, handling cargo, charter, and some scheduled passenger flights. The airport features a long runway capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, making it attractive for cargo operators and low-cost carriers. Despite its strategic location and infrastructure, it has struggled to attract consistent scheduled commercial airline service over the years.
