The airport was developed under India's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) regional connectivity scheme, aimed at making air travel affordable and accessible to smaller cities and towns. It is operated by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). The facility is equipped to handle turboprop and small jet aircraft, serving leisure travelers visiting the beaches and forts of Sindhudurg as well as business passengers.
