The airport was renamed in honor of Roberto Marinho, the influential Brazilian media mogul and founder of Globo, who had a strong connection to the region. It has a single paved runway and handles a relatively modest volume of traffic compared to Rio's major commercial terminals. The surrounding area gained significant attention during the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games, as the nearby Riocentro complex and Olympic Park were located in the Barra da Tijuca district adjacent to Jacarepaguá.
