Xigaze Peace Airport, also known as Shigatse Air Base, serves Xigazê (Shigatse), the second-largest city in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Located at an elevation of approximately 3,782 meters (12,408 feet) above sea level, it ranks among the world's highest commercial airports and operates under a dual civilian-military mandate. The airport opened for commercial operations in 2010 and primarily connects Xigazê with major Chinese cities, facilitating tourism to nearby Tashilhunpo Monastery and the broader Shigatse region. Its high altitude and thin air present significant operational challenges for aircraft performance and pilot training. As a dual-use facility, the airport serves both the People's Liberation Army Air Force and civilian carriers. Passenger volumes remain modest relative to Lhasa's main airport, but the facility plays a strategic role in China's development and infrastructure expansion across Tibet.
