Glasgow Prestwick Airport is an international airport located in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, approximately 30 miles southwest of Glasgow. It occupies a coastal site known for its consistently low fog incidence, making it one of the most operationally reliable airfields in the United Kingdom. The airport gained significant fame during World War II as a key transatlantic ferry terminal, and it famously served as the only UK stop for Elvis Presley in 1960, when his flight refuelled there. In the modern era it became a major base for low-cost carrier Ryanair, though its passenger volumes have declined sharply since Ryanair scaled back operations. The Scottish Government acquired the airport in 2013 to prevent its closure, and it has since been operated under public ownership while efforts continue to attract new airlines and private investors. Alongside passenger services, Prestwick hosts significant aerospace maintenance and cargo operations.
