Hickam Air Force Base, designated ICAO PHIK, is a United States military installation located adjacent to Honolulu International Airport (now Daniel K. Inouye International Airport) on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. It serves as the home of the 15th Wing of the Pacific Air Forces and has historically been one of the most strategically important U.S. air bases in the Pacific region. In 2010, Hickam AFB was officially merged with Pearl Harbor Naval Station to form Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, consolidating operations under a single joint command. The base shares its runways with the adjacent civilian international airport, making it one of the few joint-use military and civilian airfields in the United States. Hickam is perhaps best known historically as one of the primary targets of the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, alongside Pearl Harbor. The base suffered significant casualties and aircraft losses during that attack, and physical evidence of the bombing, including bullet holes in some historic buildings, has been preserved as a memorial.
