Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, officially designated Mitscher Field, is a United States Marine Corps installation located in the northern part of San Diego, California. It serves as the primary air installation for Marine aviation units on the West Coast and is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The station gained widespread public recognition as the filming location for the 1986 film 'Top Gun,' when it was still operated as Naval Air Station Miramar and served as the Navy's elite Fighter Weapons School. The Navy relocated its operations in 1997, and the Marine Corps assumed full control of the installation. Miramar hosts the annual Miramar Air Show, one of the largest air shows in the United States, which is open to the public and features military and civilian aircraft demonstrations. The airfield is not a commercial airport and does not serve scheduled civilian passenger flights.
