Lakehurst Maxfield Field Airport (IATA: NEL, ICAO: KNEL) is a military airfield located at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Lakehurst, New Jersey, United States. It serves primarily as a military installation and is not open to commercial passenger traffic. The site is historically significant as the location of the Hindenburg disaster on May 6, 1937, when the German zeppelin caught fire and crashed during its attempt to dock at the Naval Air Station. The field was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander Zachary Lansdowne Maxfield, a naval aviator. Today the airfield operates under the umbrella of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, which was formed in 2009 by the merger of three separate military installations. It continues to support military aviation and training operations for the United States Navy.
