Location
Mandalay, Myanmar
Mandalay International Airport (IATA: MDL, ICAO: VYMD) serves Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city and a major cultural and historical center. The airport handles both domestic and international traffic, connecting Mandalay to destinations across Southeast Asia and within Myanmar. The airport was constructed as a modern facility to replace older aviation infrastructure in the region and is located outside the city center. It serves as an important hub for tourism to nearby heritage sites including Bagan, Inwa, and Amarapura. Operations have been affected in recent years by political instability in Myanmar following the 2021 military coup, which significantly reduced international air traffic across the country. Several international carriers suspended or reduced services during this period.

Encyclopaedia

Mandalay International Airport, located 35 km south of Mandalay in Tada-U, is one of three international airports in Myanmar. Completed in 1999, it replaced the old Mandalay Chanmyathazi Airport as the city's main airport and it was the largest and most modern airport in the country until the modernization of Yangon International Airport in 2008. Its 4,267 m (14,000 ft) runway is the longest runway in use in Southeast Asia and has the capacity to handle up to 15 million passengers a year.
