Originally opened in the 1920s, it served as Cincinnati's primary commercial airport before being supplanted by Greater Cincinnati Airport (now Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport) across the river in Kentucky. Today, Lunken Field functions primarily as a general aviation reliever airport, serving private aircraft, corporate aviation, charter operations, and flight training. It is owned and operated by the City of Cincinnati. The airport features a distinctive 1930s-era Art Deco terminal building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making it one of the most architecturally notable general aviation facilities in the United States.
