In recent years, Montijo gained significant attention as a proposed site for a second commercial airport serving the Lisbon metropolitan area, intended to relieve congestion at Humberto Delgado Airport. However, after extensive political and environmental debate, Portuguese authorities ultimately selected Luís de Camões Airport at Alcochete as the preferred new Lisbon airport site instead. The base currently operates under the Portuguese Air Force and is not open to scheduled commercial passenger traffic. Its proximity to Lisbon and existing infrastructure made it a serious candidate for civilian aviation expansion, reflecting the growing demand for air travel capacity in the Lisbon region.
