Situated on the eastern coast near the Sea of Japan, it serves both Republic of Korea Air Force operations and limited domestic commercial flights. The airport has historically offered domestic routes connecting Gangneung to Gimpo International Airport in Seoul, providing an alternative to road and rail travel across the mountainous Taebaek range. Commercial operations have fluctuated over the years depending on demand and competition from improved surface transport. With the opening of the Gyeonggang high-speed rail line ahead of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, travel times between Seoul and Gangwon Province were significantly reduced, affecting the viability of short domestic air routes to the airport.
