It serves as an important regional airport connecting the city to major Indian metros. The airport sees a significant surge in passenger traffic during the Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh Mela, some of the world's largest religious gatherings held at the Triveni Sangam nearby. Special temporary infrastructure is often deployed during these events to handle the additional load. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) operates the civil side of the airport, and it handles both domestic scheduled services and occasional charter flights. Its shared military-civil status imposes certain operational constraints on capacity and expansion.

Located in the Bamrauli suburb of the city and spreading over approximately 800 acres, Prayagraj Airport is among the largest airports in Uttar Pradesh, and one of the oldest airports in India. This airport is currently under joint operation of the Indian Air Force and the Airports Authority of India.
