Ioto Airbase, commonly known as Iwo Jima Airbase, is a military airfield operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) located on Ioto Island (Iwo Jima) in the Ogasawara archipelago, approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo. The island is part of the Ogasawara Subprefecture and remains largely restricted, with no permanent civilian population. The airbase sits atop one of the most historically significant battlegrounds of World War II, where the Battle of Iwo Jima took place in early 1945. The JASDF uses the facility for training and logistical purposes, and access by civilians is strictly controlled by the Japanese government. Despite holding IATA code IWO and ICAO code RJAW, the airbase does not serve scheduled commercial passenger flights. Occasional chartered flights are permitted for relatives of Japanese war dead who visit for memorial services.
