Matan al-Sarra Air Base is a remote military installation located in the far southeastern corner of Libya, deep within the Sahara Desert near the Chadian and Sudanese borders. It has historically served as a strategic military outpost given its proximity to neighboring countries and its position along contested regional boundaries. The base gained international attention during the late 1980s due to its involvement in the Libyan-Chadian conflict, known as the Toyota War, and was the site of a significant military engagement in 1987 when Chadian forces launched a surprise attack and destroyed substantial Libyan military assets there. The facility has limited infrastructure given its extreme desert location and sparse surrounding population. The air base is not open to commercial traffic and serves no civilian aviation purpose. Its operational status in recent years is unclear given the ongoing instability in Libya following the 2011 civil war.
