Gan International Airport (IATA: GAN, ICAO: VRMG) is located on Gan Island in Addu Atoll, the southernmost atoll of the Maldives. It serves as the main gateway to the Addu City region and connects the far south of the country with the capital Malé and select international destinations. The airport was originally built as a Royal Air Force base by the British during World War II and later used extensively through the Cold War era, giving it one of the longest runways in the Maldives. After the British departed in 1976, the facility was converted to civilian use. Addu Atoll is known for its unique geography — it is one of the few naturally connected island chains in the Maldives — and Gan Airport plays a vital role in supporting tourism and local commerce in this remote southern region.
