The airport underwent significant investment and rebranding efforts to attract commercial airline service, and Avelo Airlines launched scheduled passenger service there in 2022, connecting the region to destinations in the western United States. The facility sits at an elevation of approximately 5,016 feet above sea level on the high plains east of the Rocky Mountains. Prior to its current name, the airport was known as Fort Collins–Loveland Municipal Airport. The renaming to Northern Colorado Regional Airport was intended to better reflect its regional mission and attract broader commercial interest.
