It serves as a key installation for U.S. Army aviation training and operations, supporting the Army's aviation schoolhouse mission under the Transportation Center of Excellence. The airfield primarily supports military rotary-wing and fixed-wing operations, including training for Army aviators. It is not a commercial passenger airport and does not handle scheduled airline service. Fort Eustis, now part of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, hosts the Army Aviation Logistics School among other major aviation commands. Felker is named in honor of Lieutenant Thurman Horatio Felker, an Army aviator who was killed in an aircraft accident. The airfield remains an active and operationally important facility within the Joint Base Langley-Eustis complex.
