RAF Wittering is a Royal Air Force station located near Stamford, on the border of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, close to Peterborough. It has a long military history dating back to the First World War and served as an important fighter and bomber base through the Second World War. The station became most closely associated with the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the world's first operational fixed-wing vertical and short take-off and landing (V/STOL) jet aircraft, which was based here with No. 1 Squadron RAF for many years. Following the retirement of the Harrier fleet in 2010, RAF Wittering transitioned to a support and training role. Today RAF Wittering serves primarily as a logistics, engineering, and support base for the RAF, and is home to several units involved in force support and personnel administration. It is not open to civilian commercial aviation.
